Washington DC’s phenomenal performance in the 27th NABA Inter-City Basketball Tournament held recently in the picturesque Glendale Heights in Chicago, Illinois showcases the higher level of basketball Washington DC teams have evolved into.
Represented by FYBA in the annual event, six Washington teams steam-rollered the opposition on its way to the championship round.
Four captured the coveted NABA championship trophies: the cute and diminutive but fierce and unrelenting Mosquito squad had the honor of being the first ever champions in NABA’s maiden holding of the mosquito division games this year; the Damsels as NABA’s first back-to-back champions in the division; the Seniors team also as back-to-back champions (back-to-back champions in the history of NABA is a rare feat); and lastly the Juvenile team in a grueling, nip and tuck game which incidentally went straight into overtime, thanks to the heroics of senior player Jeremiah Leano.
Reaching the finals is never an easy walk in the park.
The Washington Girls team, going for an unprecedented three-peat, lost to a better Chicago team but earned the respect of the entire NABA delegation.
The Peewee team showed grit and determination in getting to the championship round, playing their hearts out and making the opposition take notice: they will be back.
CHAMPION Juvenile Division: The Players with Head Coach Aldrin Jose
CHAMPION Seniors Division (Back to Back): The Players with Head Coach James Toling
RUNNER UP Peewee Division: The Players with Head Coach Eric Soriano and Asst. Coach Craig Summey
RUNNER UP Girls Division: The Players with Head Coach Abel Leano and Asst. Coach Bebeth Garcia
FYBA’s rise in NABA’s 25+ years of existence and its journey to multiple championships over a short span of only 7 years is nothing short of sensational.
It will never be complete without the undying, almost fanatical support of the parents, volunteers, friends and the entire FYBA family.
As defending champions next year, we are now on everyone’s watch list.
Good job, guys. Keep up the good work.
Go….FYBA….Go!
